About the item

The film is set on the eve of the Indian rebellion of 1857, around the life of the last independently ruling Nawab Wajid Ali Shah (Amjad Khan). A patron of poetry and music, the Nawab is an indifferent ruler. Also in Lucknow are his two aristocrat friends, Mirza Sajjad Ali (Sanjeev Jumar) and Mir Roshan Ali (Saeed Jaffrey) who are deeply immersed into playing chess. They derive immense pleasure in developing chess strategies and have become irresponsible in their duties towards their families and society. While Mirza's neglected wife, Khurshid (Shabana Azmi) tries to wean him away from his compulsive playing, Mir's wife Nafeesa (Farida Jalal) urges him on with the game, for she is having an affair with her cousin. A bigger game of chess is being played in the political field. The British are plotting to overthrow Wajid Ali shah and when the British troops approach Lucknow, the two friends, afraid of being called to battle, run away from home to continue their bloodless battle of chessboard. Their city Lucknow falls to British attackers as they are busy playing a game of chess). The film concludes with the British annexation of the Nawab's kingdom of Awadh in 1856.
