About the item
The Mogami, the unique naval aircraft cruiser of the Imperial Japanese Navy, entered service in 1935. Due to various design defects, three modifications were made, the first due to lack of stability. On the second, armament changed from the 6" treble towers to the larger 8" double turrets. The conversion to an aircraft cruiser took place in 1942 to 1943 after a failed submarine evasion and the collision with the Mikuma as well as several bomb hits of American carrier aircraft. After further heavy battles against the enemy US fleet, a heavy fire broke out on the ship in autumn 1944. The remaining crew has decided to leave the ship and sink it with torpedoes. The Mogami disappeared into the depths of the Mindanao Lake.
