Please note the slats on the base of the er and therefore a liner can be used if required (you do not have to), ideally use some rocks, old pot pieces at the base of the er to support the growing media/compost and to assist with correct required drainage and to prevent root rot. Roughly, this trough takes 2 to 3 bags of 60ltr compost depending on how much drainage base product is used.
